When this Featured Volunteer retired, he was looking for a way to give back to his community. Little did he know, he’d be getting back so much more. Cal started volunteering with Edmonton Meals on Wheels nine years ago and has enjoyed it since his very first shift. “The ‘thanks’ from my clients on my first few routes were very satisfying”, he says. Cal became a Meal Delivery Driver on recommendation from his friends. He’s continued for many reasons, one of them being how much he can help. “I had a client who needed pictures hung after her house was painted. Her son kept promising to do the job, but after two years she had given up. I spent an hour hanging this senior’s pictures and she turned to me and said ‘now I feel like my house is home! Thank you so much’. I knew I had met a need.” Cal enjoys coming into the Meals on Wheels office before each shift and being surrounded by people that have turned into friends. Cal has great things to say about Meals on Wheels and the work that him and his fellow volunteers do. Recently, he was the face of Edmonton Meals on Wheels volunteers on CTV. He says that this was his most memorable shift to date! In addition to delivering meals, Cal also serves as a Board member. “The moment I was asked to be on the Board of Directors, I realized my efforts had been noted and recognized by the organization”, he says. Outside of Meals on Wheels, Cal keeps himself busy by golfing, curling, singing Barbershop Harmony in a Chorus and Quartet, and, because he can’t seem to get enough of Meals on Wheels, growing his community garden for our Grow-a-Row program! His goal he hopes to accomplish from volunteering? “Making connections with people and making sure the clients know someone cares, when times are difficult for them. I also enjoy helping the organization’s needs to produce quality food in a caring manner.” Thank you for all that you do for Meals on Wheels, Cal!
