Edmonton Meals on Wheels

Meet Julie and Laura- Two Volunteers That Turned Into Amazing Employees!

Have you ever enjoyed doing something you much that you wanted to make it your full time job? That’s exactly what Julie and Laura thought when they first started volunteering at Edmonton Meals on Wheels. “I really enjoyed the experience. When I got to spare for a route I had done before it was nice to be remembered by the clients”, says Julie, our Volunteer and Scheduling Coordinator. And remembered by the clients, she is. Julie went from delivering meals to clients in need, to mapping out the best routes for volunteers, so that clients can get their meals on time. Julie says it was a change sitting on the other side of the desk, but one that felt right. “I was contemplating a new direction job wise. It truly felt like it was meant to be and all the right things just fell into place.” Julie’s day is busy, but always ends on a high note. When volunteers return from their deliveries, they routinely pop in and tell kind stories about their routes and the clients that they got to visit, that day. “I really get to know the volunteers, and I get to know the clients they deliver to through their stories and experiences with them.” This, Julie says, is the best part of her day.

Across the office and into the kitchen, you can find Laura preparing and packaging Chef’s Choice Frozen Meals for clients. “I was interested in a job where I felt I could make a positive difference in other’s lives”, says Laura, Frozen Line Cook. “It’s rewarding to see that small mountain of frozen meals, knowing how much work and how many people it took to get there.” Laura first started volunteering in April 2014 and credits the knowledge that she was helping members of her community stay healthy and in their homes as to why she enjoyed her time so much.  Laura has liked her transition from volunteer to employee, and says that the camaraderie between her fellow colleagues is something that she thoroughly enjoys. “I genuinely like the people and environment at Meals on Wheels.” What makes Laura’s day? Seeing her finished product and knowing that she has completed the job at hand.

Julie and Laura, we are so lucky to have you both on our team. More importantly, our clients are lucky to have you two!
