“If it wasn't for Meals on Wheels, I probably wouldn't be able to stay in my home at my age." -client, Donald

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the meals free?

Edmonton Meals on Wheels is a paid-for service. Revenue from meal fees goes directly to purchasing groceries for the meals, and helps offset other food programs. There is a subsidized rate available for low income qualifying clients on the Hot Meal Program.

Are there requirements to receive Meals on Wheels?

No. There are no membership fees and no referrals needed. You can sign up and delivery can start the next business day.

There are also no age restrictions. Our typical client is a senior, but you don’t need to be over a certain age to receive our meals. At present, 13% of our clients are under 60 years old. Some people need to use our meal service temporarily – after being discharged from the hospital, for example. Others need our services on a more permanent basis.

What times are meals delivered?

Our security-screened volunteers deliver Chef’s Choice® Daily Meals weekdays between 10:30 am and 1 pm.

Volunteers also deliver Chef’s Choice® Frozen Meals Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 4:30 and 7 pm.

Can you choose your meals?

The menu for our Chef’s Choice® Daily Meals is on a six-week rotation as set out by our Chef. A set monthly menu is published ahead of time so you can see the daily meals.

For Chef’s Choice® frozen meals, clients choose which meals and meal items they would like.

Can Edmonton Meals on Wheels accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes! We can accommodate dietary restrictions (i.e., for diabetic, low sodium, no pork and renal diets). We can also accommodate texture modifications and preferences (i.e. cut-up, soft, minced, pureed).

How many staff and volunteers work for Meals on Wheels?

We have 19 staff members (17 full-time, two part-time). Ten work in our kitchen, and nine work in our office.

Last year, we had over 1,400 volunteers help us. Volunteer positions include: Meal and Grocery Delivery Drivers (we need a minimum of 25 Drivers per day), Kitchen Helpers and Grocery Shoppers. Volunteers also help at special events.

Another vital part of the Edmonton Meals on Wheels team is our Board of Directors, a skilled team who volunteer their time and help lead our organization.
